Jenifer Evans: The Final Narcissistic Works
+ PAINTLUST PROJECT SPACE NZ CLOSING NIGHT

TUESDAY 14th July 2009 from 5pm (one-night only)

Paintlust is proud to present the final exhibition at Paintlust Project Space, Christchurch, New Zealand with a solo project by English artist Jenifer Evans. This project has been conceived specifically for the Paintlust space, and marks the final exhibition in the current New Zealand incarnation of Paintlust. The installation includes drawings, books, and two films- ‘On Second Thoughts, Eddie!’ made by Jason Dungan, Jenifer Evans, Claire Hooper, Eddie Peake, Paul Richards, Guy Rusha, Gili Tal and Joseph Walsh, and a short film by Evans called ‘Animation to Avoid Closure’. Evans graduated from the Royal College of Art with a MA in painting in 2007 and is currently represented by RITTER/ZAMET in London.

‘The works are the last gasp of a joyfully narcissistic practice. I’m the girl in gold in the film, a boxer and artist in the drawings, while the animated interval documents my studio over a period of 3 months and the Catalogue Raisonne Volume 1: 1985-2007 contains work, notes and photographs I made from the age of 3 to 25. The drawings are presented as equally important as the film, and equally dramatically. You can’t be distracted by the moving images while looking at the still ones, and the film is a soundtrack for the drawings, giving these final self-portraits a cinematic air.’ -Jenifer Evans 2009

‘Drawing Bookcase' by Ahn Doojin

June 16 th –June 27 th 2009

OPENING PREVIEW- Tuesday June 16 th 5:30pm

Paintlust is proud to present the penultimate exhibition at Paintlust Project Space, Christchurch , New Zealand with solo projects by Spanish artist Yaiza Nicolas and Korean artist Ahn Doojin.

Yaiza Nicolas presents a project entitled Beast & Beauty, which was realized during a trip from Dubai , United Arab Emirates to Kyoto , Japan at the beginning of 2009. Beast & Beauty sets out a relationship between an idyllic environment and a hostile one- juxtaposing the Japanese Sakura and the landscape of Dubai .

Ahn Doojin will exhibit for the first time a collection of drawings, paintings, and notebooks that form the source for his large scale paintings and installations. Ahn's installations use a combination of found material in the form of children's toys as well as site-specific paintings which reference his own imagery narratives- continuously developing a language and system of making paintings and installations that is self-generating.

Paintlust is proud to announce the opening of a new project space in Christchurch , New Zealand . This will be the first in a series of temporary projects spaces and exhibitions that will move from country to country under the direction of different artists and curators involved with the international collective ‘Paintlust'.

Paintlust is a newly formed international artist collective with members from NZ, Korea , Taiwan , and Spain . Paintlust Project Space will exist in NZ until mid-July 2009, and during this time will show a mix of international and local artists. Paintlust aims to promote practices that explore new possibilities in contemporary painting, against a time in which location and nationality do not necessarily go hand in hand.

The opening exhibition entitled ‘The Cooking Show' features Japanese artist duo Limocon, alongside Auckland-based New Zealand artist Seung Yul Oh. In ‘The Cooking Show' both artists use video and the light-hearted guise of cooking paraphernalia to explore the peculiarities of process and hierarchies inherent in material and process. The facade of humour in both works not just as a device, but as an end in its own right- playing off allusions to the painting object and established procedures.

Limocon is Japanese duo Motoco Sakai and Lila Takagi . Both artists graduated from the Tokyo University of Art and Design. Recent exhibition participation includes the ASYAAF in Seoul (2008) and Art Award Tokyo 2008. Seung Yul Oh is an Auckland-based artist and has shown extensively throughout New Zealand . Recent projects include the installation ‘Oddooki' at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa , and the ‘Art Suitcase' project for the Auckland Art Gallery .
